Dr. kim j. hammond

The Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Kim J. Hammond, has practiced veterinary medicine since earning his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1981. Dr. Hammond received an MBA in 1994. In June 2011 Dr. Hammond completed the Penn Executive Veterinary Leadership Program at The Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania. He is also a Master Farrier and pilot.

In 1982, Dr. Hammond started Falls Road Animal Hospital, the first 24-hour, full service emergency veterinary practice in Maryland. To this day, Falls Road remains the only 24-hour full service Veterinary Hospital in Baltimore Maryland. In its first year, Falls Road Animal Hospital's 2 doctors saw 1,500 office calls. By the year 2000, the practice had expanded to twelve doctors, with a staff exceeding 110, servicing over 75,000 office calls yearly. In 2008 Dr. Hammond was nationally recognized as one of Americas Top Veterinarians in Emergency Medicine and Surgery. In addition he was awarded the honor of "Outstanding Veterinary Contributor." In 2010 Dr. Hammond was awarded “Health Care Hero” by the Daily Record, and won the Baltimore City Paper Readers Poll for “Best Veterinary Hospital”. In July 2010, He was selected by Smithsonian as one of the top 40 Image Hunters of the world. In 2011 Baltimore Sun Paper Media Group Readers Poll “Best Vet” award. “Best of Bethesda 2011” Readers’ Picks & Top Vote-Getters Bethesda Magazine. While working full-time at the animal hospital, Dr. Hammond is currently the editor and co-host of a weekly pet segment that airs live on WBAL, Channel 11 in Baltimore.

Dr. Hammond has vast international Veterinary experience. He is A National Fellow of The Explorers Club. In 1974; a senior at the University of Colorado, Dr. Hammond was a researcher with the Charles Darwin Research institute and participated in an expedition to the Galapagos Islands to develop a trail for tourist to use throughout the park. Until this point people walked all over the park destroying habitat for flora and fauna. Working for the Peace Corp in Niger Africa, he led a team of five U.S. veterinarians and twenty four Peace Corp volunteers to assist local authorities in rehabilitating and strengthening the operations of The Niamey Museum Zoo, Wildlife Game Reserves and the last free roaming giraffes in West Africa.

In 2003, Dr. Hammond initiated a Zoo Veterinary- Training program at Falls Road Animal Hospital to provide opportunities for small animal veterinarians to gain zoological experience. In 2004 Dr. Hammond led a team of two veterinarians from the Baltimore Zoo and one Astronaut veterinarian from NASA to the Costa Rican Sloth Rescue, and began a medical and animal exchange program. He joined The Board of Directors of The Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project in 2005. In 2006 Dr. Hammond formed the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Training Program. Mountain Gorilla Veterinarians from Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have participated, in residence, in an internship at the Falls Road Animal Hospital in Baltimore. In 2008, He began a pilot program in the Maryland School System providing secondary lesson plans in science, math, geography, language arts revolving around The Mountain Gorilla and People.

Dr. Hammond's extensive involvement in the motion picture industry includes his work on "Pirates of the Caribbean I, II, and III," " Under Dog," "Cat Woman," "Cats and Dogs," Willard II," "Runaway Bride," "The Green Mile," "Stuart Little," "All the Pretty Horses," "Avalon," "Accidental Tourist," and "Her Alibi". In addition to his work with Boone Narr and Animals for Hollywood.

Birds and Animals Unlimited, directors Garry Marshall and Ellen Schwartz, and Academy Award winning directors Barry Levinson and Billy Bob Thornton, Dr. Hammond has published many articles in both veterinary science and general interest publications. He is Veterinary Editor and Arts and Entertainment Correspondent for Animal Fair Magazine (launched 1999). Finally Dr. Hammond has professional relationships with many of the leading designers in the fashion industries in Paris, Milan. Dr. Hammond served on the animal care committee at Johns Hopkins University, and has held academic positions at the Maryland-Virginia School of Veterinary Medicine and at the Beijing Agricultural University in Beijing, China. For his work at the latter institution, he received a Presidential Citation from George Bush Sr.

Dr. Hammond Co-wrote and introduced the "Puppy Mill Bill” into the 1992 U.S. Congress with Congressman Benjamin Cardin and The Humane Society of the United States to end the mass production of puppies and kittens in commercial breeding operations. In 2005 he began assisting in a research program developing immunocontraceptives for canines and felines. In 2010 he initiated and funded health care plus nutrition for the service dog of The Baltimore Child Abuse Center. Since its inception in 1982, Falls Road Animal Hospital has received numerous national and local awards for “Health Care Hero 2010”, Outstanding Veterinary Contributor, Baltimore's Best Animal Hospital, Baltimore's Best Veterinarian, Baltimore's Best Pet Store and Baltimore's Best Kennel. Dr. Hammond has appeared as a guest on The Tonight Show, CNN, Joan Rivers, The Situation with Tucker Carlson, ABC, CBS, NBC, KCAL, KPIX, KRON, and has been featured in People Magazine, Cosmopolitan Magazine, and the New Yorker Magazine, among others.
